If you thought the animal kingdom was strange, try the kingdom of the plant. Especially terrestrial species had much more time to evolve into what they are now than any fully terrestrial animal species ever had. When mosses like the liverwort started to take over the land, it took quite some time before aquatic animals started to take on a terrestrial life permanently.
It is believed that liverwort, the first species that could live on land, did so 476 million years ago. The first independent terrestrial animal is thought to have moved on land 450 million years ago, Now, 27 million years look like nothing over a period of nearly 500 million years, but humans, or more specifically: primitive Homo sapiens first appeared 300.000 years ago. So terrestrial plant life has an advantage of more than 475 million years over people and 27 million over terrestrial animals. That is 90x the time it took for humans to evolve from primitive homo sapiens to what we are today. Take the modern homo sapiens and we’re talking about 200.000 years back in time.
We as a species are just a blip, animals though, or plants… That’s a whole different story.
Life to Legend is ever-growing, and so is the demand for specific articles, tools, and more. The last update was in late December 2021, so it’s time to go ahead and come up with a new update! So where is LtL standing, and what are the future plans as it stands now?
Light and contrast are two things that go hand in hand. If there was no light, there wouldn’t be any contrast either, because everything would be shaded. In our world, there’s always light, unless you go deep underground or are in some airtight kind of structure with no lights on.
Light is what helps us not only to see but also to understand textures. Without this light, we can of course feel our way through and figure out materials on the go, but being a very visually oriented species, light helps us out way more.
Color theory is a tough subject as is. When you ran through our other color theory articles, you will know the basics already. This article is the next step. How is color affected by light and other objects? And to what degree will it affect the objects? There is no simple answer to that and depends on many factors. You will do just fine when you’re drawing without the following knowledge, but these tips will help you get to the next level and make your artwork pop!
There are many ways to improve your color perception. To some people color theory comes easy, but more often than not, these people are already fairly expressive in their art. They have a stylized or very artistic approach to art in which color is just a way to emphasize their goal. For artists that lean a bit more toward realistic art, color theory is a bit harder because color shifts in our world are way more subtle. but they are there!
